TUNIS — The Arab League’s joint efforts have taken a pivotal step forward as the 57th session of the High Coordination Committee for Joint Arab Action officially opened Wednesday at the headquarters of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) in Tunis. The meeting was chaired by Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, and brought together leaders and representatives of various Arab organizations and institutions.
In his opening remarks, Aboul Gheit emphasized the relevance of the key issues on the agenda, foremost among them being the Palestinian cause in light of the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza and the West Bank, and the worsening humanitarian crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip. He also underscored the importance of embracing artificial intelligence and its applications to align with modern knowledge systems.
Discussions addressed the action plans of specialized Arab organizations, the development of the Arab Digital Platform for Sustainable Development, and the commendable role of Arab institutions in post-conflict reconstruction, notably in Gaza and Syria, including future visions for satellite broadcasting and communication.
The session also explored ongoing preparations for the Fourth Arab Media Conference, set to be held in Baghdad from May 19 to 22, 2025, under the initiative of the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU). The conference, themed “The Role of Media in Addressing Climate Change”, is being organized in close collaboration with the Iraqi Media Network.
Abderrahim Suleiman, Director General of ASBU, previously highlighted the importance of the upcoming conference, which coincides with the Arab Summit scheduled for May 17 in Baghdad. He stressed the role of Arab media in spotlighting urgent global concerns such as climate change and environmental sustainability, while also continuing to support the Palestinian cause and raise awareness about the devastating impact of war and displacement across the region.
Iraqi Minister Karim Hammadi, President of the Iraqi Media Network, expressed satisfaction with the progress of preparations for the conference, emphasizing its significance as the first edition to be held outside the ASBU headquarters. He noted that this reflects the event’s growing regional and international openness, especially as it tackles pressing climate and environmental issues affecting all facets of society and development.
The 57th session of the coordination committee is seen as a cornerstone for crafting integrated political, economic, and social strategies in the Arab world. It stands as a symbol of Arab solidarity, especially during a time of global transformations and challenges. The committee’s work aims to identify shared concerns, propose effective solutions, and ensure a secure and prosperous future for Arab societies.
